The Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature was founded in 1957 as the English Department of the College of Letters, Saigon University. Following 1975, it became the English Department of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the University of Ho Chi Minh City. The Faculty later became a faculty in its own right in 1996 and has continuously developed ever since into one of the leading faculties of the now USSH, VNUHCM.

Its vision is to help students to become lifelong learners and global citizens by providing them with a dynamic and professional learning environment where their creativity, critical thinking, and whole-person development are particularly encouraged. The Faculty has 52 full-time staffs and many visiting scholars and professors from all over the world who play an active role in its regular workshops, seminars and conferences.

The Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature offers both undergraduate and graduate programs which have been accredited by the ASEAN University Network (AUN-QA). The annual enrolment of the Faculty is about 3,600 students. Its three streams of specializations for the undergraduate level (namely English Linguistics – Language Teaching; American and British Culture and Literature; and Translation and Interpreting) have been embraced by students coming from different walks of life with a variety of learning needs. The on-site training is enriched by practicums and internships in both local and international organisations. The graduates have been rated among the most dynamic and competent employees in the Vietnamese labour market.

In addition to teaching, the Faculty seriously takes research as a crucial component of its training aim. The Faculty lecturers and students ceaselessly devote their time and effort to doing research to improve the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning.

The Faculty has its own library called the English Resource Center (ERC), opened in 1993 under the sponsorship of BP (British Petroleum) and Maxwell Macmillan Publishing Co. and later on by many other organisations. It houses such a sizeable collection of thousands of encyclopedias, dictionaries, books, magazines, and theses on English language teaching and learning that interested readers around the country consider it a choice destination for their research and study needs.
