Below are the USSH’s ten notable alumni. The list is loosely ordered, so the most recognizable ones are at the top of the list.

In November 2017, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City will mark the 60th anniversary of achievements. Over the period of the past 60 years, the University has experienced three main phases: the University of Saigon Faculty of Letters (1957-1976), Ho Chi Minh City University (1976-1996) and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.


At present, the University is one of the two biggest educational institutions in Vietnam in the field of social sciences and humanities. Besides, the University tops the nation in terms of the number of international students. In 2016, more than 5,500 international students were enrolled in various courses and research projects.
Below are the USSH’s ten notable alumni. The list is loosely ordered, so the most recognizable ones are at the top of the list.

Vo Van Thuong, politican


Born in 1970, Vo Van Thuong is currently the youngest of the 19-member Politburo of the Vietnamese Communist Party Central Committee. He is also a member of the Secretariat and the head of the Central Commission for Propaganda and Education.

Mr. Thuong graduated with a degree in Philosophy. After graduation, he had been holding various positions in the Ho Chi Minh City Communist Youth Union and Vietnam Communist Youth Union before he was transferred to be the party secretary of Quang Ngai Province. At the 12th National Congress of the Vietnam’s Communist Party of 2016, he was elected a Politburo member.


Đặng Thị Ngọc Thịnh, a politician


Born in 1959, she is currently the Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Ms. Thinh originally came from Duy Xuyen, Quang Nam Province. She majored in History. She has been holding various key positions such as the Standing Vice President of Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU), Vice Secretary of Vinh Long Province Party Committee, Deputy Head of Office of the Party Central Committee and the Vice State President.


Trương Tấn Sang, politician


Born in 1949, he was the 8th President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Mr. Truong Tan Sang originally came from My Hanh, Duc Hoa, Long An Province. He graduated with a degree in Law. Upon being a student, he was heavily involved in communist youth activities. After that, he served as the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee and the 8th President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.


Trương Mỹ Hoa, politician 

 

Born in 1945, the former Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Ms. Hoa majored in Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature. Prior to 1975, she joined many patriotic movements and was jailed many times by the South Vietnamese government.
Before being elected the Vice State President, Ms. Hoa had been the Vice President of Vietnam Women’s Union, the Chairwoman of the National Committee for the Advancement of Women in Vietnam, the Vice President of Vietnam’s National Assembly and then the Vice State President.


Nguyễn Thanh Tùng, politician


Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung is currently the Secretary of the Party Committee of Binh Dinh Province,

Mr Tung graduated with a degree in History in 1981. Prior to the current job as the Secretary of Binh Dinh Province Party Committee, he was the secretary of Vinh Thanh District Party Committee, the chairman of Binh Dinh Province People’s Council and the vice Secretary of Binh Dinh Province Party Committee.


Tất Thành Cang, politician


Born in 1971, he is currently the acting Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

Mr. Cang graduated with a degree in Law in 1997. Then he held various positions such as the Secretary of District 2 Party Committee, and the Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation and Public Works before being elected the acting Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.


Võ Thành Thống, politician 


Mr. Vo Thanh Thong is the Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee.

Mr. Vo Thanh Thong graduated with a degree in History in 1984. He has moved up from being the Director of the City Department of Finance, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee and currently the Chairman.


Lê Thanh Hải, politician


He was the former Politburo member and Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

Mr. Hai majored in Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature. He worked his way up from the grassroots level to the top of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.


Huỳnh Như Phương, professor, literary critic


Professor, the former Dean of the USSH Faculty of Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature

Prof. Huynh Nhu Phuong was born in 1955 in Mo Duc, Quang Ngai Province. He graduated from the Faculty of Letters with a degree in Vietnamese Literature. After graduation, he returned to the university to be a faculty member. He has been instrumental to the development of the Faculty of Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature. He is a famous literary critic with numerous highly-acclaimed works.


Trần Văn Liêng, businessman


He is currently the CEO of Vietnam Cacao joint stock company.

Mr Liêng graduated in 1989 with a degree in English Linguistics and Literature. He had worked for Southern Food Corporation (VINAFOOD II) before he became the General Manager of American Rice Corporation). Now he is the CEO of Vienam Cacao JSC.
