The USSH VNU-HCM 2017 in review - The 10 Major Events

The year of 2017 is a special year for the USSH VNU-HCM with multiple achievements. Here is a recap of the university’s accomplishments over the past year.

1. THE 60th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES, VNU-HCM (November 8th-20th, 2017)


The 60th Anniversary of Foundation and Development of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM was celebrated on November 20th, with the participation of the university’s notable alumni, staff, lecturers, students and more than 300 distinguished guests. 

 

On this occasion, a host of events and activities, namely the opening ceremony; officially announcing the 60 notable alumni representatives; publishing researches and books about history of the university as well as directory of scientific researches, student movements, etc; meeting of alumni representatives; photo exhibition; calligraphy exhibition; business workshops; student festival; gala night, etc.


The university had planned and prepared for this significant anniversary by 2015. Taking this opportunity, the USSH VNU-HCM fulfilled its multiple purposes: acclaiming its missions and position in Vietnam’s education system, highlighted the university’s philosophy “Whole Person – Liberal – Multicultural Education,” reinforcing and developing international cooperation, honouring the university’s values and cultural traditions throughout periods of development, offering various programs to support the students, and developing organizations and centers under the university.

 

2. THE USSH VNU-HCM WAS EXTERNALLY ACCREDITED



 

On behalf of the USSH VNU-HCMProf. Vo Van Sen – President of the USSH VNU-HCM received the Accreditation Certificate

 

On May 29th, the USSH VNU-HCM received the Certificate of Education Accreditation. The University got nationally accredited with 86.9% of the excellent rate.

 

Speaking at the awarding ceremony, Prof. Vo Van Sen, President of the USSH VNU-HCM expressed: “With 60 years’ history, USSH is proud to be one of the two largest and most prestigious institutions in Vietnam offering high-quality education as well as doing research in the field of social sciences and humanities, leading in the enrollment of international students from 73 nationalities. Also, the university closely associates with Sai Gon – Gia Dinh student movements, and constantly contributes to revolutional history of Vietnam”.

   

During the quality assessment, the university’s staff, lecturers and students were aware of the importance of consistently upgrading the the university’s educational quality to become the leading institution for social sciences and humanities studies. The Accredition has reputably proclaimed USSH’s traditions in education.

 

3. ANNOUNCEMENT OF USSH’S VISIONS, MISSIONS, OBJECTIVES AND PHILOSOPHY 

  



“Educating high-quality human resources” is among the missions the USSH has committed to.

  

On April 27, the USSH VNU-HCM President signed the 15/QĐ-XHNV-HCTH Decision on issuing The Visions, Missions, Objectives and Philosophy of the USSH in a new era. The Decision consists of three main parts:


Vision 2030:

As a member of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) is one of the leading international research institutions in social sciences and humanities in Asia.

 

Missions:

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities (the USSH) is the centre that provides:

- High-quality human resources and typical research works on social sciences and humanities;

- Strategic contributions to the socio-economic and cultural development of the country.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) is the leader in building a liberal academic environment in terms of social sciences and humanities.


Objectives: In the 2016-2020 period, USSH innovates in the areas of human resources development, training quality, scientific research and in the cultivation of university culture.

 

Philosophy: Whole Person – Liberal – Multicultural Education

    

4. PROF. DREW GILPIN FAUST – PRESIDENT OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY VISITS AND PRESENTED AT USSH VNU-HCM

 

 

 

Prof. Drew Gilpin Faust, President of Harvard University (US), received a gift of appreciation from the USSH VNUHCM

 

On March 23, Prof. Drew Gilpin Faust, President of Harvard University, and delegates met with the President of VNUHCM and the USSH VNUHCM on potential bilateral cooperation. Prof. Drew Gilpin Faust is among the first president of Harvard University to visit Vietnam universities.

 

Prof. Drew Gilpin Faust appreciated the warm welcome from the USSH VNUHCM. Prof. Faust highly appraised the university’s achievements as a leading educational institutions in social sciences and humanities studies in Vietnam. Prof. Faust also mentioned that Harvard University will consider the potentialities for cooperation in the near future.

 

On this occasion, Prof. Drew Gilpin Faust had a public lecture with students and lecturers of the USSH VNUHCM with the topic: “Aftermath: War, Memory and History”.


During her speech, the professor mentioned that one of the reasons for her visit to the USSH VNUHCM is its leading role in social sciences and humanities studies in Vietnam, particularly in History. Prof. Faust also encouraged Vietnamese students to apply for training programs at Harvard University.

 

5. THE CONFERENCE OF UNITED PRESIDENTS OF SILK-ROAD UNIVERSITIES NETWORK 2017


 

Heads of Participating Universities took group photo to celebrate the successful meeting at USSH VNUHCM

 

From November 9th to 11th, the USSH VNUHCM hosted the General Assembly of Silk-Road Universities’ Network (SUN) 2017 with more than 200 distinguised guests and delegates of SUN member universities from South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Uzeberkistan, etc.


The Conference included: The 3rd General Assembly of SUN, the workshop for United Presidents of Silk-Road Universities Network; Workshop for Representative Students of Participating Universities; Workshop for the International Association for Silk-road Studies on “Exchanges between East and West civilizations along the Silk Road”, International students’ cultural exchanges events, tours for international guests to learn about history, culture, society of Ho Chi Minh City.

 

The Conference has enhanced the leading role of the USSH as well as the VNUHCM in international collaboration. The university has proactively participated and incessantly contributed to this prestigious universities network.

 

6. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON “SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES IN SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNATIONAL INTEGRATION”


 

 

The conference took place on November 19th, attracted more than 200 local and international scholars. The conference had 8 presentations at plenary sessions and 60 panel reports, covering the following topics:


1/ Overview of the training and research achievements of faculties and departments of the USSH VNU-HCM during periods: (1) the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the system of Saigon Higher Education Institute, (2) the University of Ho Chi Minh City, (3) the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the system of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City


2/ Identification and evaluation of the characteristics and development progress of social-science training and research during periods of time 


3/ Delving into academic issues of social-science research in Vietnam and abroad

 

7. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “ENGAGING WITH VIETNAM – AN INTERDISCIPLINARY DIALOGUE: TOURING VIETNAM: EXPLORING DEVELOPMENT, TOURISM, AND SUSTAINABILITY FROM MULTI-DISCIPLINARY AND MULTI-DIRECTIONAL PERSPECTIVES”





Scholars from overseas institutions attended the 9th “Engaging with Vietnam - An Interdisciplinary Dialogue”.

 

From December 28th 2017 to January 4th 2018, the USSH VNUHCM cooperated with University of Hawaii at Manoa (USA), Thu Dau Mot University, and An Giang People’s Committee to organized the 9th international conference on “Engaging with Vietnam - An Interdisciplinary Dialogue”.

 

More than 150 scholars from various overseas universities, and local universities, namely Hanoi Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam National University, other universities of Hue, Hanoi, An Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Binh Thuan, Danang, together with Quang Tri, Thai Nguyen People’s Committee, An Giang Department of Science and Technology, Institute of Han-Nom Studies, Institute of Social Sciences of the Central Region; US – ASEAN Business Council; Vietnam-Germany University, Fulbright Vietnam University, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Institute of State and Law, Institut Francophone International

 

During 42 working sessions, scholars and researchers presented the panel proposals, interdisciplinary and practical researches on Vietnam’s developmet; 11 keynote sessions featured by policy makers, researchers, lecturers; together with Hackathon Competition and Artists Talk; One-day trip HCMC-Binh Duong; Theme-based Tours in An Giang, etc.

 

The conference covered various interdisciplinary approaches to the development of tourism, urbanization, cultural-social, language, literature, education, national policies, etc. On this occasion, scholars also shared their researching results and experiences on sustainable developmet, strategic exploiting natural resources, policy-making, cooperation to sustain and cope with natural disasters; as well as contribute with specific solutions for heritage management, technology development or in education, tourism, etc.

  

8. THE SUCCESS OF APPLIED-RESEARCH PROGRAMS IN AN GIANG PROVES PROPER DIRECTION OF USSH IN RESEARCH TRANSFER

 


 

 

 “Kindle Teaching Inspiration” exchange event between USSH’s lecturers and teachers in An Giang.


“Improving teaching methods for social subjects in An Giang High Schools 2018-2020” plan is the significant achievement among USSH VNUHCM and An Giang Department of Education and Training. The plan includes organizing training sessions, monitoring and evaluating the teaching activities, three field trips; three workshop focusing on teaching and teachers with the participation of specialists, lecturers and teachers in Ho Chi Minh City.


Besides that, the research on “Developing An Giang’s exclusive collections of tourism products and services 2017-2018” is expected to cover both scientifically and practically benefits for local tourism, as well as to mark the successful cooperation between USSH VNUHCM and An Giang Province. The university has supported An Giang governments with professional consultants in various directories.

 

Prior to that, the “Improvements of teaching methods for social subjects at high schools in Dong Thap 2014-2016” plan wassuccessfully co-implemented by the USSH VNUHCM and Dong Thap Department of Education and Training.

  

9. LAUNCHING NEW TRAINING PROGRAM: DISTANCE LEARNING FOR VIETNAMESE STUDIES.

 

The academic year of 2017 marked the first time that the USSH VNUHCM introduced the distance learning program for Vietnamese Studies majors. To enroll in the course, the students need a certificate of high school graduation (for locals), or prove of Vietnamese fluency with at least 3/6 (B1 level). The four-year program includes 120 credits.

  

The results and experiences gained from the first class of Vietnamese Studies distance learning will be an important foundation for an upcoming plan of opening other programs.

 

10. THE USSH COMMUNIST YOUTH UNION AWARDED A CUSTOM FLAG OF “EXCELLENT ORGANIZATION” FOR  TOPPING ZONE NO.2 –  UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES AND VOCATION SCHOOLS IN HO CHI MINH CITY

On June 27, at the 2016-2017 HCMC Communist Youth Union Annual Meeting on youth union and student activities, USSH Communist Youth Union was awarded with certificate for “Excellent organization leading Zone no.2 – including universities, colleges and vocational schools.”

 

During 2016-2017, the USSH’s Youth Union activities and campaigns were remarkably successful. One of the significant achievement is the implementation of the 05-CT/TW Direction on enhancing learning and complying Ho Chi Minh’s philosophy, ethics as well as the campaign to build model manners among Youth Union – Student Association’s executives.
