The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VietnamNationalUniversity – Ho Chi Minh City has a long history from the FrenchJunior College of Social Sciences and Humanities to Vietnam University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi according to the Decree 01-NĐ/GD on January 4, 1950. After the 1954 Geneva Agreement, the University was reborn in Saigon bearing the name the French Preparatory College of Social Sciences from November 1955 under the system of Vietnam national universities, and was officially established as the University of Social Sciences under the system of Saigon universities according to the Decree number 45/GD on March 1, 1957. From 1976 to 1996, the University became part of social sciences and humanities in Ho Chi Minh CityUniversity. Since 1996, the University has borne the name The University of Social Sciences and Humanities under VietnamNationalUniversity – Ho Chi Minh City (USSH–VNU-HCM). Its mission nowadays is to train qualified intellectual citizens and to cultivate research fields in line with international standards. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Ho Chi Minh City is currently one of the two largest state tertiary education and research institutions in the field of social sciences in Vietnam.
With strong undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees and research programs in social sciences and humanities, the University aims at providing highly qualified human resources with political and moral dignity, practical knowledge and skills necessary to cope with emerging problems and meet the challenges of contemporary issues at the required level of each degree set by the Vietnamese Education Laws.
The University currently houses 26 Faculties and Departments and employs more than 600 full-time Faculty and Department members who hold doctorates and master’s degrees from different education institutions of Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Germany, America, United Kingdom, France, Australia, Austria, Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, etc. Many of our professors were awarded training programs and participated in visiting programs in other parts of the world. Apart from its relations with domestic education and research institutions, the University has established strong cooperation with 150 universities, institutes and NGOs in many countries in the world. Annually, the University hosts hundreds of international professors and scholars to deliver lectures and conduct research in various academic disciplines. This helps strengthen and improve the training and research services of the University. Hundreds of undergraduate and post graduate foreign students come to study and research in the framework of student exchange programs.
With about 40,000 native and foreign undergraduate and graduate students, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities affirms its role as the high quality education and research center of the Southern part of Vietnam. Each year the University provides to Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces more than 2,500 graduate and postgraduate students with high expertise and professionalism.
The University is striving to reach the standards of accredited universities of South-East Asia and later, of the world.
Strategically, the main goal of the University till 2020 is to meet regional and international standards. Presently, the University is implementing a fast-paced strategy with breakthrough and innovative programs and measures in building a professional teaching staff, improving teaching methodology and syllabi, and developing infrastructure in the direction of modernization, specialization and professionalism. As such, the University will substantially contribute to the advancement and identity recognition of Vietnamese social sciences.
