The Faculty of Oriental Studies, established in 1992, was originally the Department of Asian Studies under USSH. Its goal is to train undergraduate students to have a good general knowledge of the region; a good command of foreign languages; and expertise in the geography, history, culture, economy, politics, and international relations of a specifc country that they study in its relationships with other countries in the region and in the world.
In its frst year of operation, the Faculty offered courses in two majors, namely, Chinese and Japanese Studies. For the time being, the Faculty covers 6 disciplines (Indian Studies, Indonesian Studies, Thai Studies, Chinese Studies, Australian Studies, and Arabic Studies). The Faculty of Oriental Studies is the only institution in Vietnam offering courses in Australian, Indonesian, Indian and Arabic Studies up to now. Since 2004, the Faculty has offered postgraduate courses in Asian Studies. It will soon offer Ph.D. courses in Oriental Studies, Chinese Studies and Southeast Asian Studies.
The Faculty has carried out various projects at ministerial level and key projects at Vietnam National University as well as at university levels. In addition the Faculty has cooperated with and organized numerous conferences on international, national, and university scales; and printed a series of oriental books on history, culture, economy, politics, etc. Every year, the governments of India, Indonesia, and Thailand send lecturers to teach and assist the Faculty in terms of facilities, award scholarships to students, as well as sponsor seminars, international conferences, and the compilation and publication of books and reference materials for training and research.
